Program Title:
Lean Principles in BIM Coordination
Speakers:
Jim Youngblood, Consultant LACCD
David Francis, Southland Industries
(See Bio's Below)
Abstract:
One of the main impacts of BIM is the use of virtual coordination in the design and construction phases of a project. This process has created a new “field” of expertise on What, When, Who, How and Why to effectively implement a coordination process. This process is used at all stages of a project to identify potential design, constructability and maintenance issues. The presentation is aimed at identifying “issues” and “waste” in the process and outline how to effectively implement virtual coordination utilizing lean principles. The co-presenters will be Jim Youngblood who works as a consultant for the LACCD and a vast experience with virtual coordination utilization from the owner’s point of view and David Francis, who is the Planning Manager of Southland Industries, who will bring the Design/Build contractors experience in the process. Both will be using their industry experience and lessons learned to present an outlined approach from design to construction to maintenance on utilization of virtual coordination.
Speaker Bio's:
Jim Youngblood has a B.S. in Business, with a specific emphasis on Production/Operations Management, which focuses on streamlining processes and Lean principles. With 17+ yrs. industry experience working in the field, 10+ years as a GC (both medium to large Regional GC and National GC experience - Hospitality, Biotech - Labs and Production/Mfg spaces, Aviation, M.O.B., 4 years University - specifically from Engineering, Preconstruction support, Scheduling to Project Management)), and 5+ years Construction Management (K-12, Community Colleges)) added with $1.6Bn in BIM volume experience ($850M in DB experience (DBIA Professional Certification) and $800M of GC specific built models). Jim has presented at CCFC, USC and Harvard among others venues.
David Francis is a passionate advocate for BIM and Virtual Coordination in the construction industry as the Planning Manager for Southland Industries. With over 20 years’ experience in Design/Build Mechanical contracting, he has been involved in many aspects of our business including, field installation, design, detailing, fabrication operations and facility management and MEP Coordinator. He is currently involved in Southland's continuous development of their BIM processes for design, detailing, coordination, fabrication, installation and maintenance. He is actively working with GC's and contractors to apply Lean principles to streamline the design/build/coordination process. He has broad experience in many market segments including: Healthcare, Education, Clean Rooms, Government, Public, Hospitality, Manufacturing, Industrial and Data/Telecom .

Lean Construction Institute (LCI)
The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.
The Los Angeles Area Community of Practice is being developed to provide local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors and suppliers who are doing business in the LA Area. We invite project delivery team members to meet together as a Community of Practice to learn, share and develop a lean community in the LA Area.
